1999 1600i engine rebuilt questions.

Beitragvon wellcraft » Sa 20. Sep 2014, 04:06

Hi guys, new to the forum with questions.

I need to rebuilt my engine which has 396, 000 km and i just found out that the pistons on these motors are domed and was told by antonio trejo from mexico as this is a mexican beetle that I can use the aftermarket rebuilt kit with flat pistons but I will lose performance.

Do any of u guys know where to get domed pistons to replace the original ones, the oem kit is $700 and I don't want to spend that kind of money when I can buy a rebuilt kit for less than $200. I just want to be able to rebuild it without spending too much money and dont want to have to do modifications and want to be able also to keep thecurrent injectors asit looks likeis hard to get parts for these cars. Would love to get a bit more horse power bjtdont want to lose much fuel economy.

What options do I have when rebuilding this 1600i engine, is it really true that by using flat pistons I will be losing power?

What other members in here are able to rebuilt their engines?

By the way, I need to replace my transmission and I have the option to upgrade the gearing, whta are the recommendations for that too?

Thanks in advance for any help.

JR.

There should be no real difference in the pistons with a noticable power leak. Maybe we talk about 1-2 PS... which can be compensated easily by ignition, chip tuning or a slight different cam.

My 1600i engine has 1776ccm and some more upgrades... 115 PS instead of 46. That's what i call a difference. And it has flat pistons ;)

Bigger cylinders, bigger bore. Up to 1.9L with chip is possible and works.

Or just use 1641ccm cylinders... not 1684ccm. That will compensate more than enough + 2-4 hp.

Sorry for the ignorance, I consider my self really good wrenching but I've never done a rebuilt my self, used to help my father with his engines but cant remember the cylinder part of the rebuilt, I have a friend of mine who knows this cars and will be helping me. He doesn't know this specific 1600i engine as he used to work the older ones and he actually rebuilt the one he has on his bus which I believe are basically the same but a bigger engine.

My question is, in order to accommodate bigger pistons, what's involved by doing that, will the block need to be modified or its something that just need to take one out and put bigger ones?

Again, sorry for the ignorance.

Thank you.

1641 and 1684 cylinder fit directly without any machining into a series crank case.

1641 is weaker than series, but still "sufficient". 1684 is pretty weak, just 1.5mm cast iron...

The strongest upgrade is 1776ccm with 90.5mm pistons... but this needs machining of crank case and heads. But is the best upgrade ever. Very strong 72hp just with series parts.

Ok, I want to do the best way possible and have a reliable car as it will be a daily driver, by going the 1776cc route, my gas mileage wil decrease to much?
How much more could this add to the total cost of rebuilding the engine and what else would I have to replace?
Will my current injectors be enough for this set up?

Since I do have to replace the transmission, what gearing should I get if I'll be taking highway speed of around 75 mph, that is sometimes but most times will be city. And I will be driving it daily and probably will be upgrading wheels from 15 to 17 inches.

Thanks again.

Hi guys, update.
We did another compression test and this time it went really good. We found out the gauge we were using was bad. We check a few things and I do need a full tune up kit. We're do u guys fine everything needed for a tune up for a 1999 1600i engine?
I did a search but im not sure if the tune up kits i found are the same for these specific engines as i belive they use a differnt spark plugs, what are u guys using? would like to replace everything needed for a well done tune up.

Can I use one of this http://www.jbugs.com/category/vw-igniti ... ts_09.html
