Replacement Speedometer

Hi there,

My German isn't great so I'm asking in English.

The speedometer in my 1600i beetle is not working anymore - both the fuel gauge and odometer are working but the speedo needle is not. I've had a good look around for a replacement from local companies and also on ebay etc (i'm based in the UK) but I can't seem to find an exact replacement that fits the part number I need (BAA-957-021/D). I have seen a lot of speedos from old beetles that look similar but have a different part numbers (113-957-023) and am not sure if they would be a suitable replacement. Does anyone know? Alternatively I've also seen a number of speedos from super beetles (1303 models) - would these fit my beetle?

Thanks in advance for any help,

Rob

Thanks hannes,

I've managed to get hold of one of the old style speedometers but just had one question on your response - you say that I need to "replace the currant- stabilisator ( on the upper backside )" - can you explain what exactly you mean here? I'm not sure I fully understand what is different compared to the current speedo in my 1600i?

Thanks,

Rob

Hello Rob,
if you use an old spedometer you have two ways to realize the fuel gauge.
- Either use the existing fuel gauge in your old speedometer. If you do that, you have also to exchange your fuel sensor with the old one.
- Replace the old fuel gauge with the one from your 1600i speedometer, this won't fit perfect, but i got some mails from people which had it done.

Attention: You can't change only some parts from old to new or vice versa, they are not compatible !

Hi there,

Thanks for the advice, unfortunately trying to fit the old speedometer in my beetle didn't work at all - my mechanic had numerous issues and was unable to make anything work correctly.

However I have now managed to track down the exact part number i need -i understand that they no longer make the speedometer BAA 957 021 D and that the new version is a 1BM 957 021 speedometer which will replace the existing unit. I've managed to locate a few places in Europe that sell them which is good but i just have one final issue with this - all the replacements are defined in kilometers per hour (KPH) however i am based in the UK and need a miles per hour (MPH) version.

Does anyone know if MPH versions of this part exist? If not am I able to just use a face plate and place that over the top? It looks like that is what has been done on my existing speedometer but i am wondering if anyone else has done this successfully.

Thanks,

Rob

For my 71' Karmann Ghia reimport I simply added the correct labeling in km/h by using adhesive number stickers attached on the speedometer glass. This was sufficient to our german TÜV.

Furthermore, there is a small enterprise doing good work in adapting speedometers:
