strange cold starting and engine rev up..

Hi everybody,

My 1600i (1997) show two strange problems; Sometimes when i turn contact key, the tachometer needle jump to the top along with a vaccum sound at the engine bay (last owner installed a tach directly to the ignition coil).... when I start the engine (cold), revs up to 1500 RPM first, then as it gets temperture RPMs down to 850 (wich i think it's normal), but sometimes cold starting is all the way different, first at 850 RPMs (no "choke" effect), runs very "uneven", sometimes stop running along with a strong gasoline smell at exhaust.....

Any advice or approach ??

Hi everybody,

Now the engine behavior is even stranger, once in motion it doesnt stop accelerating until 3 or 4 seconds after the accelerator is released. .... when i shift neutral to stop, RPMs rise and stay at 3000. Only after turning off for few seconds, RPMs return arround of 850. I went to the mechanic, we couldn't see lamba probe readings because it was extremely filthy, after some cleaning, TPS position and ingnition timing check, the exhaust gas smell has gone, but everything else remain the same. I have expended so much time and money (last two years) in this car, that i'm about to quit. no mater how much effort and passion i put, every day seems to get worse, and nobody knows why .....

Any idea or approach???
