Ah, you've found one of my old posts (I think I posted it on VZi if I remember rightly).

Also check the diode plate at the back of the alternator to make sure that none of the wires on it are loose and make sure that none of the diodes have been burnt out. However, having said that, it may be easier to replace the alternator as the rear alternator cover is very difficult/impossible to remove.
Another item to check is the battery to starter motor cable (especially at the starter motor end) as a corroded starter motor ring terminal can cause the same symptoms (alternator charge warning light on, (!) LED on). I got caught out early last year when the starter motor's ring terminal snapped off due to corrosion.
I sold my 1600i Beetle last April (there was far too much rust on it after I spent a lot of money on it), so I'm not really online 1600i-wise nowadays (my main cars are now 3 Reliant Rialtos). I've still got my 1300 Beetle and my type 2 T3 camper.

Anyway, Happy New Year everyone.

Glückliches Neujahr an alle.
